Today the seat of the Public Library of the town of Verbania, Villa Maioni is situated between State road number 34 and the lake, just a short distance from Intra and Pallanza.
Built in 1925 by Pietro Maioni, an industrialist from Intra, and his wife Emilia Roveda, to the design of the architect Giuseppe Baroggi, it bears witness to that
particular moment between the late 1800s and the first years of the 1900s which saw the start of the modern holiday.
The building, of rectangular shape, has two floors above ground, and a light forepart with an arcade covered by a terrace towards the lake and a symmetrical staircase that links the ground floor to the spacious, surrounding garden.
The park has a flat surface area of about 30,000 square metres and is crossed by a network of paths all around the villa. The garden, arranged in English style, is enriched with tall trees and some precious species, including numerous beeches, magnolias and Cedars of Lebanon.
The entrance to the villa, situated slightly higher than the level of the garden, is on the opposite side, towards the north, and can be reached by following a brief avenue lined with Prunus.
The public park of Villa Maioni was severely damaged in the 2012 tornado. Along with the few surviving trees, the collection of winter-flowering camellias is intact.
This collection will soon be increased with the addition of several hundred different varieties of camellia.
